Letter carrier delivers couple
from burning home

Jan. 6, 2012 -- On Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 4, letter carrier Jason Dang was delivering mail when he suddenly found himself pressed into action after a house caught fire on his Rye Brook, NY, route.

Dang, a member of Hudson Valley Merged Branch 137, was one of the first on the scene shortly after Gus and Judy Uhry called 911 to report the fire in their home, and the carrier helped the retired couple quickly find safety in a neighbor's house.

“He actually gave Mrs. Uhry his coat to wear — they came out with just the clothes on their back,” police Chief Gregory Austin said. “He was in the right place at the right time, and really did a heroic thing by helping them out of the house.”

Stories about the fire—highlighting Dang's heroism—were carried in The Daily Rye and The Journal News.
