“If you really want to see why NALC has MDA as a national charity, go to one of the summer camps,” said NALC National MDA Coordinator Jim Williams. “You’ll be blown away by the courage of the kids and their families, seeing how they cope.” Click here to read the article in the August 2010 Postal Record.

SPOTLIGHT ON MDA RESEARCH
Find out more about the advances the MDA are discovering every day in this newsletter.
The event was similar to the International Association of Fire Fighters’ annual “Fill the Boot” MDA fundraiser.
In the 1950's when NALC had “porch light brigades,” we collected money from customers after work for MDA. NALC raised more $3 million annually, at a time when letter carrier salaries were only $4,400 per year. If the previous generation of letter carriers collected that kind of money, we should be inspired to do even more for our longtime charity.
This was not a USPS-sponsored event. However, the postmaster general agreed to allow letter carriers collect MDA donations in uniform with satchels for this event.
Be sure to check and abide by the laws in your community regarding fund raising events and plan accordingly to make your “Fill the Satchel” day the most simplistic, productive fund raiser that you have ever organized.

2011 Telethon for MDA
The 46th annual Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association was Sunday, Sept. 4.
This year's shorter show—reduced from its traditional 21-1/5 hours to six prime-time Sunday night hours—drew millions of viewers in its new slot, 6 p.m. to midnight.
Each hour of the telethon featureed two local segments.
NALC Executive Vice President Tim O'Malley appeared live at 10 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Pacific) with carriers representing the union's top fundraising branches. He presented MDA National Goodwill Ambassador Abbey Umali and National Youth Chairman Luke Christie a check for the $1.75 million in contributions collected by NALC members for MDA over the last year.
Onstage with O'Malley to represent the top fundraising branches were:
Branch 38 New Jersey Merged: Peter Bednarz
Branch 6000 Long Island NY Merged: Charles Smith
Branch 2 Milwaukee: Ron Blazel
Branch 14 Louisville: Bob Bracy
Branch 358 Northeastern NY: Michael Curran
Branch 56 Grand Rapids: Paul Bumstead
Branch 197 Shreveport,LA: Bradley Huston
Branch 205 Fargo-West Fargo, ND: Randy Sorby
Branch 74 Saginaw: Mark Swan
Branch 924 Freehold, NJ: Jacqueline Caffrey
Branch 5229 New City, NY: Michael Bagarozzi
The NALC became the MDA’s first official national sponsor nearly 60 years ago, and active and retired letter carriers and their families raise millions for for MDA each year through golf tournaments, walk-a-thons, bingo nights, pancake breakfasts, raffles, roadblock canister drives and more, including the annual national “Deliver the Cure” bowlathon.

The funds raised by NALC are in addition to the millions of dollars in pledges and contributions received from the public during the telethon, which is watched each year by millions of viewers on more than 170 television stations as well as on the organization's website.
MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. It also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education, and maintains clinics nationwide for adults and children with muscle diseases.
MDA President and CEO Gerald Weinberg said NALC’s support has been gratifying over the years. “Letter carriers are the face of our Postal Service and a part of the fabric of every American community,” Weinberg said. “We couldn’t be more proud to be partnered with them.”
America's letter carriers have helped lead the search for cure for neuromuscular diseases for half a century. The NALC was the first national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and letter carriers are among MDA's top fund-raisers, collecting more than $20 million in the past 15 years alone to finance research and provide care and services for children and adults with muscular dystrophies. NALC's local branches are honored annually during the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon over the Labor Day weekend for their efforts.
Branches can now register to take part in the year-long campaign to raise funds for NALC's official charity. Branches that fill out a registration form will receive a packet of materials designed to help branches redouble their efforts.
By clicking here, you will launch a small program (MDA Branch Form.exe) that allows you to type required information directly into the NALC registration form. (If the program doesn't open, right-click the link and save it to your computer or open a PDF of the form here).
