NALC's MDA Awards

Millions to fight Muscular Dystrophy

NALC branches that raise the most money for MDA are honored each year with a trip to accompany President William H. Young to the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon for the ceremonial presentation of the union's total contribution to aid "Jerry's kids."

The NALC/MDA Campaign Contest was started in 1986, and branch delegations are introduced on the air during the telethon. The winners are announced each year in early summer.

In the past, the union sent the first and second place winners in five categories. However, in 2007, in order to increase the opportunities for branches to be represented in the national MDA telethon, the number of category winners for MDA awards was modified by changing the branch membership size for award categories. The goal is to give branches a better chance to compete.

The categories for awards are:

Category 1 0-49 members   Category 6 500-699 members
Category 2 50-99 members   Category 7 700-999 members
Category 3 100-199 members   Category 8 1000-1499 members
Category 4 200-349 members   Category 9 1500-1999 members
Category 5 350-499 members   Category 10 2000+ members

In the past, we sent the first and second place winners in five categories. This change means that only one winner in each category will go, but our overall number will remain the same at 10, with a special category for the top Auxiliary.

Also, two awards will be given to all branches that achieve excellence in fund-raising. A branch
that raises more than $5,000 will receive a certificate naming it a “Friend of MDA.” Branches that raise more than $10,000 will win the President’s Award, which will be commemorated by a plaque signed by our National President. These awards will be given each calendar year.

If your branch is not participating in the NALC/MDA Campaign, consider the benefits that will be gained by your involvement. Muscular Dystrophy is a worthy cause and contributions by NALC members, during many years of involvement, have enabled researchers for muscular dystrophy to make breakthroughs in the discovery of cures for the neuromuscular diseases.
Join the muscular dystrophy team and assure the good work now taking place will continue.
