2004 Artistic Envelope Competition Announced

Washington ~ Amateur and professional artists across the nation were invited today by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to submit uniquely designed envelopes in a competition for the 10th Annual "Graceful Envelope Contest," co-sponsored by the Washington (DC) Calligraphers Guild.

This year's theme is ‘The Weather', a tribute to the vast array of climates, seasons and elements and how they affect our lives and especially letter carriers who work under the heralded motto: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

Entries must be postmarked by April 19, 2004. The contest is open to all ages, with entrants 12 years of age or younger judged separately. Winners will be chosen in three regional classifications.

Entrants are encouraged to illustrate the theme in a creative and artistic way while using hand-executed calligraphy or fine lettering to address the envelope. Inventive relationships between the postage stamp used and the envelope design are also encouraged.

The contest was created in 1995 by the Smithsonian Institution's National Postal Museum, which delegated responsibility to the Washington Calligraphers Guild in 2001. Last year, the NALC joined as a partner to sponsor the contest and exhibit the winners.

All envelopes must be addressed using hand-executed artistic lettering to: The Graceful Envelope Contest, Washington Calligraphers Guild, P.O. Box 3688, Merrifield, VA 22116-3688. Contest rules and other information can be obtained at the Guild's website.
