NALC’s Annual Food Drive lauded in House of Representatives

Today, Reps. David Joyce (R-OH), Tim Ryan (D-OH), Joyce Beatty (D-OH), Michael Turner (R-OH), Bill Johnson (R-OH), Bob Gibbs (R-OH), and Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) introduced H. Res. 322, a resolution recognizing NALC’s 27th “Stamp Out Hunger®” Hunger Food Drive. Resolution language includes a brief history of the food drive and notes that in 2018, NALC collected over 71,600,000 pounds of food to help restock food banks, pantries, and shelters throughout the United States. 2018 marked the 15th consecutive year that the Nation’s largest one-day food drive collected more than 70,000,000 pounds of food.

Since 1992, NALC has helped communities across the country by holding a national one-day food drive. Prior to that, letter carriers actively worked on food drives at the local level with a great deal of success, so NALC, after holding pilot food drives in 10 cities decided to roll it out nationally.

This year’s food drive is on Saturday, May 11.

“The National Association of Letter Carriers greatly appreciates the recognition by members of the Ohio delegation,” said NALC President Fredric Rolando. “Food banks, pantries, and shelters across the country see a surge of donations in the holiday season each year, but those stocks often run low by spring. Letter carriers are proud to organize this food drive each year and to have collected more than 1,670,000,000 pounds of food since it began in 1993.”

NALC encourages letter carriers to reach out to their Members of Congress and ask them to sign onto the resolution. You can call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and provide your ZIP code to get in contact with your member.
