Two heroic carriers honored on CBS Evening News

The heroic action of two Peoria, IL Branch 31 letter carriers who rescued an abducted boy outside their post office is scheduled to be reported tonight on the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley, 6:30 p.m. EST. The segment is scheduled as the last in the half-hour news show, so it should air close to 7 p.m. (Its airing is, of course, subject to change.)

The two carriers received the NALC’s Heroes Unit Citation award last fall for their efforts, which began when Cristy Perfetti noticed a boy with a suspicious man outside her post office. She and a supervisor confronted the man. The supervisor took the crying boy to safety in the post office, where he said he’d been abducted at knifepoint. Perfetti and fellow carrier Steve Plunkett followed the fleeing man and took photos of him. Their work helped police arrest the suspect, who had prior convictions for crimes against children and was sentenced to life in prison.
