122 House lawmakers urge financial support for USPS in letter to House leadership

Today, a group of 122 Representatives led by Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II (D-MO) sent a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) urging financial support for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) in the next Covid-19 legislative response package.

In the letter (viewable here), the group of lawmakers note the essential role USPS plays in our nation’s economy and in responding to this pandemic. Lawmakers also highlighted the work done every day by letter carriers and other postal employees, even throughout this crisis, as front-line workers. The letter goes on to recognize that the $10 billion loan provided in the recently passed CARES Act (H.R. 748) is not enough to keep USPS solvent and that the agency must be provided emergency appropriations in the next legislative relief package.

NALC appreciates the support from these Members of Congress and thanks them for elevating the need of the Postal Service at this time. While their letter outlined $50 billion in direct relief, NALC has urged leadership to tackle relief in a slightly different manner consistent that with weathering the pandemic (viewable here). Letters sent to Democratic and Republican leadership are viewable here and here.

NALC will continue to monitor all legislative activity related to USPS to keep letter carriers up to date on the latest action and encourage letter carriers to convey NALC’s requests for relief.
