Running for Congress is expensive, and the House candidates who won in 2012 raised more than four times the amount of funds compared with those who ran in 1986. Many members of the House and Senate are quick to proclaim their distaste for fundraising, but campaign contributions are necessary for just about anyone to enter the political sphere. Candidates who fall behind their opponents in fundraising often lack sufficient resources to compete and may fail to gain the support they need to win their election campaigns.
