Although a political action committee (PAC) has become an essential piece of an advocacy organization’s toolkit, many groups are still building their PAC infrastructures and sustainable donor bases. This includes the labor movement, which still has a long way to go before catching up to PAC spending by corporate and trade associations.
Unlike other associations that can allocate a portion of their budgets to PAC funds, unions’ use of dues for political expenditures is prohibited by federal law. Instead, unions must rely entirely on the voluntary contributions of their members to help get their supported lawmakers elected.
