Honoring Santa Clara, CA Branch 1427 member and longtime NALC Activist Al Apfelbaum

Al Apfelbaum passed away on October 12, 2023. Brother Apfelbaum, an Army veteran, started his USPS career in December 1968 and served as a shop steward, union activist and officer of Santa Clara, CA Branch 1427. He was 78 years old.

In December 1990, Al was appointed as a Regional Administrative Assistant (RAA) in Region 1 by President Sombrotto. Al served in that position until President Sombrotto appointed Al as an Assistant to the President at NALC Headquarters beginning in 2001. Al Retired in early 2012, after serving the NALC at the Regional and National level for 22 years. Upon his retirement, he returned to serving his branch until his death last month.

Al is survived by his wife Dinna, his daughter Danielle and his grandson Joseph.

NALC President Brian L. Renfroe, expressed his admiration of Al’s long career serving his union brothers and sisters saying, “On behalf of the entire NALC, we mourn the loss of Brother Al Apfelbaum and offer our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. I relished the opportunity to work with Al at NALC Headquarters prior to his retirement. His contributions to NALC during his many years of service, as well as his spirit will forever be fondly remembered. He will be greatly missed.”

Director of Safety and Health Manuel L. Peralta added, "I have worked with Al as a branch officer, an RAA and here at headquarters for over 25 years until his retirement. He was a good friend, a great unionist and a caring human being. We will all miss him."
